New Fee for U.S. Visa Application

Effective June 4th 2010, United States will increase the Non Immigrant Visa Application Fee. The Fee for most categories, including tourist and business visitors visas (B1/B2) and Student and Exchange Visitors Visas (F, M and J), will rise from the current $ 131 to $ 140. The fee will rise more for other categories which require more work to process. These categories and new fees are as follows:
H (Temporary workers and Trainees) $150
L (Intracompany transferees) $150
O (aliens with extraordinary abilities) $150
P (athletes, artists and entertainers) $150
Q (international cultural exchange visitors) $150
R (religious workers) $150
Treaty Traders and Investors (E Visas) $390

The US Embassy will be able to accept the difference between the old and new fees in the Consular section at the time of interview.

FAQ’s

Why is the United States increasing the basic nonimmigrant visa application fee to $140 from its current amount of $131?

We are required by law to recover the cost of processing nonimmigrant visas through the collection of the application fee. A Cost of Service Study, conducted by an independent contractor, determined that the cost of accepting, adjudicating, and issuing nonimmigrant visas is more than $131. Among the factors raising our costs since the fee was last revised in 2008 are new security-related requirements, new IT systems, and a new mandate from Congress to charge nonimmigrant visa applicants $1 to support programs to combat trafficking in persons.

When do the new processing fees go into effect?

The new fees will go into effect on June 4, 2010.  All applicants with interview appointments on or after that date must pay the new fee.

What if I already paid my fee for an appointment after June 4th?

Applicants will have to pay the fee in effect on the day of their interview appointment, regardless of when they pay.  Our fee collection contractor, Alliance Bank, will begin to collect the new fees as soon as possible. But applicants who have paid the old fee of $131 will be able to pay the difference when they come to the Embassy for their interviews.  If you have paid your fee at Alliance Bank, you will not need to return to the bank to pay the additional fee, but you should bring enough money to your interview (ringgit or dollars – cash only) to pay the additional fee.

Why is the United States establishing new, higher fees for certain types of nonimmigrant visas which previously cost $131, the same as all other nonimmigrant visas?

The Cost of Service Study showed that certain categories of nonimmigrant visas are more complicated and require more in-depth consideration, such as review of extensive documentation and a more in-depth interview, than other categories, such as tourists. Therefore, those categories of visas have higher unit costs and applicants for these visas should pay more.

Will this fee increase discourage people from traveling to the United States?

Past increases in nonimmigrant visa fees did not negatively impact the number of applications received worldwide.  We are aware that this fee increase may suppress the demand for nonimmigrant visas in some countries.  However, the cost is still small compared to the cost of round-trip airfare from most countries to the United States. Most visas issued worldwide are tourist visas with a validity of ten years, meaning the bearer can apply for admission to the United States any time during that ten-year period.

Can I comment on these fees?

The Department of State has published additional data from the Cost of Service
Study at http://www.regulations.gov/search/Regs/home.html#documentDetail?R=0900006480aee4e6, and will accept public comments on that data for 60 days (until July 19, 2010). The public may comment in any of the ways laid out in the rule published on  www.regulations.gov. Later this summer, the Department will review and consider any comments received from the public and publish a final rule

Good news from the U.S. Embassy
June 20, 2008

We are always trying to make it easier to apply for and receive your U.S. Visa. We are happy to announce these two improvements:

Courier return of passports with visas

Successful visa applicants now have an option to collect their passports at the VFS office, or have their passports couriered to them within Malaysia by ABX Express for a courier fee of RM30 per passport.

The process follows these easy steps:

  1. Go to the nearest Alliance Bank after you receive the pre-printed pay-in slip from the Embassy (your passport number is required to make payment).
  2. Your pay-in slip will be activated the next business day. Log into www.vfs-usa-my.com and the service will guide you through addressing the courier label.
  3. Delivery will take one day for addresses in West Malaysia and 2 days for East Malaysia.

On-line payment of all visa related fees

Starting 20th June 2008 onwards, Alliance Bank customers will be able to pay all fees related to visas—the visa application fee of RM440, the visa application logistic fee of RM 27, and the courier fee of RM30, by secure internet payment via Alliance Bank’s internet banking channel.

  1. You enter your Alliance Bank Account number.
  2. You key in the visa applicant’s passport number and name.
  3. You pay for the service (the RM 440 and RM 27 MUST each be paid to schedule an interview).
  4. You print your receipt after confirmation to take to the Embassy

So, you can pay your fee on- line, book your interview on-line, fill out your visa form on-line, and after your interview pay for the courier delivery on-line. All that’s left is a trip to the Embassy (with all the required documents) for your interview.

U.S. Embassy announces new service for visa applicants
May 23, 2008

Starting May 27th, people who qualify for American visas will have the option to have their visas returned by courier. We believe this will better serve people who would rather not come back in person to our Application Center to collect their passports. We have a safe and reliable partner in ABX courier, who is already working with other foreign Missions to deliver their passports.

For an additional RM 30 per passport, visa recipients will be able to choose the address and person to receive their passport, through our web-site, without having to go in person to either the Application Center or the courier’s office. Visa recipients will get their visas in as little as two days after the inter view.

The process will work in these easy steps:

  1. After qualifying for the visa, the recipient will get a pay- in slip at the Embassy. The pay in slip is pr e-printed, there’s no account number to memorize.
  2. If they choose to use the service, they will go to the nearest branch of Alliance Bank.
  3. Alliance Bank will enter their passport number and date of payment, in the same way the visa recipient paid for the visa fees. The recipient will keep a copy of the pay-in slip. One fee is needed per passport.
  4. The next business day, the recipient logs back into the Application Center’s on- line service, using details from the pay-in slip. The service will guide the recipient through addressing the courier label—who gets it, which address, etc.
  5. When the passport is delivered from the Embassy to the Application Center , the Center will insure the details on the label are accurate, and seal the passport in an ABX courier envelope for same day delivery to the courier.
  6. The courier will make next day deliver y to the peninsula, and two day delivery to East Malaysia
